Biography Of Catherine Ceniza Choy s Empire Of Care

Catherine Ceniza Choy, author of the book Empire of Care, is currently an Asian American Studies professor and department chair of Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. With a Ph.D in history from the University of California, Los Angeles, her research interest is on the impact of United States‟ global presence, particularly in Asian countries. In Empire of Care: Nursing and Migration in Filipino American History (2003), Choy question the reasons underlying the massive exports of professional nurses from developing countries like the Philippines to wealthier countries such as the United States. By combining interviewees‟ professional perspectives, and historic archival details from both sides of the ocean, her two-shores approach brings to light the complex relationship between the United States colonialism in the Philippines of the early twentieth century, current U.S. immigration legislation and the mass migration of Filipino nurses to the United Sta tes after 1965. Choy explains the unique link between the field of nursing and the twentieth century migrations of Filipinos to the America has deep roots originating back to the foundation work laid down as early as the United States‟ annexation of the Philippines.
