Catherine Ceniza Choy, author of the book Empire of Care, is currently an Asian American Studies professor and department chair of Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. With a Ph.D in history from the University of California, Los Angeles, her research interest is on the impact of United States‟ global presence, particularly in Asian countries. In Empire of Care: Nursing and Migration in Filipino American History (2003), Choy question the reasons underlying the massive exports of professional nurses from developing countries like the Philippines to wealthier countries such as the United States. By combining interviewees‟ professional perspectives, and historic archival details from both sides of the ocean, her two-shores approach brings to light the complex relationship between the United States colonialism in the Philippines of the early twentieth century, current U.S. immigration legislation and the mass migration of Filipino nurses to the United Sta tes after 1965. Choy explains the unique link between the field of nursing and the twentieth century migrations of Filipinos to the America has deep roots originating back to the foundation work laid down as early as the United States‟ annexation of the Philippines. Khaled Hosseinis, The Kite Runner, is a flashback narrated by a 40 year old Afghan-American man named Amir, who is plagued by his childhood sins until he seeks redemption for his wrongdoing and figures out that redemption requires painful sacrifice. Amir is a kid who experinced someone so loyal to him be raped and Amir did nothing to stop the rapist. One sin led to another and before Amir knew it, he was destroying his life. After his father died, who was someone who he looked up to most, Amir started to go on the path to redeem himself and his guilt where is when he learns the true meaning of sacrifice. Hosseini uses Amir’s misguided notion of sacrifice and his long journey toward redemption in order to ultimately convey that true†¦show more content†¦He needs to understand his motive in doing those actions because his intention was not for him to feel regretful for the rest of his life, but he was not thinking about how this could be a long term effect on his life a nd others. Hosseini conveys the turning point when Amir gets on the right path to learning and understanding the true nature of sacrifice by attempting to redeem himself. Amir plants money and his new watch that he got for his birthday under Hassans bed to make it look like Hassan stole it. Baba brings Ali, Hassan and Amir together and Amir explains that â€Å"They’d both been crying; [He] could tell from their red, puffed-up eyes...they stood before Baba, hand in hand, and [he] wondered how and when [he’d] become capable of causing this kind of pain† (105). Hosseini uses this scene to demonstrate the true colors of Amir that he is a liar. This scene also highlights the loyalty that Hassan has towards Amir and his family and but it is not the same from Amir to Hassan.
